Now the craziness starts...I have the new cover of my Vespian Way series. I also have a pen name - Bethany Drake. I have enough trouble writing on this blog so I'm not sure if I'll create a new one, but I'll keep you posted as I get caught up on everything...I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel...

Writing Updates: My Mind is Never Idle #amwriting

This has been a hectic week. The people renting our house moved out and we're getting to ready for sale. I have been spackling holes and dings, wiping down doors and baseboards. Peeling off stickers they had left on the walls. I ache everywhere. This sedentary body isn't used to all this manual labor.

The one good thing about this busy work it allows my mind to have the freedom to do what it wants. I've written ten books in the Vespian Way with each book pushing at me to write it before I was finished with the one before it. There were times when I was working on three different books in different stages of writing or editing at the same time. This last book though started out of necessity. I knew I needed to write to keep me sane. As I've been working on it I thought maybe I was done with the series for a while and I would have time to work on something else.

Nope.

While I've been working on getting my old house ready for sale I was slapped with an idea.

Now understand I'm one of those authors that doesn't care for a series where the hero and heroine are constantly pulled apart. I don't want to do that with Heather and Storm, but I need to keep it interesting which is why there is always something for them to fight.

We, as authors are told to do the worst thing to our characters. The worst thing I can think of is killing one of them off, but I don't want to do that so what can I do? That's when it hit me. What if I create an environment where it looks like I've killed them off - I know I did that in Stolen Desire but this is different - what if I use one of the computers Heather is searching for to cause her and Storm to fall into a coma? What if I have Heather's mind jump into another person's body? What if Storm wakes up from his coma but Heather doesn't because her mind is in another body and he has to deal with the fact that his mate is not there for him or this war they're fighting?

One little thought will grow into a book. I just need a little more time.

Tell us about your latest release. 

The third in my unique series about good vampires who safeguard humans is "Immortal Relations Coming Out" and as the title implies they discuss the benefits versus the risks in allowing humans to know that they are more than fiction, myth and legend. They saved mankind from a potential thermonuclear war as well as two ecological disasters in book two, "Immortal Relations, Love and War" so it seems timely to discuss the possibility of forming a strong bond between the species. Human fears, born of the actions of ancient bloodthirsty vampires argue against coming out to humans. However, seeing human governments sliding back toward the abyss of dictatorships, something must be done, so a coven is established in Southern-Canada to monitor the situation in the not so "united" United States.   

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers. 

1.) Who is your favorite author? Do you feel you write like them? 

The late Tom Clancy was, in my eyes, the ultimate writer of military-political action novels. He also joined with several other authors to publish similar books who continue to develop those stories. My works are in the paranormal-romance genre' but they have military and political components as my vampires do operate in the modern world to safeguard mankind, often from the efforts of evil politicians to enslave those people they should be serving. I'd love to have my stories compared to Clancy's; however, I fear no one can equal the depth of his writing style! 

2.) What was your favorite book growing up? 

J. R. R. Tolkin's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The details in the story of "Middle Earth" about the forces of good versus evil was so intriguing to my young mind that I read each novel and the prequel, "The Hobbit" many times - 'til dog-eared pages fell from their bindings.  

3.) Are you a plotter or a pantser and why did you choose that method? 

The stories develop in my mind while I'm in a dreaming sleep and while I'm actually writing, so I'd say pantser. As far as "choosing" the method, it feels more like the method chose me. 

4.) Do you consider writing a career or a hobby? Why?

 Hmmm...how about a duty? I've seen and done a lot during my military career and later working in psychology so I feel I have a responsibility to present some of what I learned, hopefully in engaging storylines. 

5.) What are you working on now? 

I'm researching for a novel about time-travel back to the age of dinosaurs. I'm writing it because my granddaughter LOVES dinosaurs and I want to write it for her.  

6.) What one piece of advice would you like to pass on to an up and coming author? 

Write what you are interested in not what you think others want to read...not everyone is going to like what you write, but as long as you like it don't be deterred.  

7.) If you had the ability to time travel and your first visit was to see a younger version of yourself what would you say to that younger self?

 Spend more time with your wife and children rather than so much over-time in the military. 

8.) You just got a million dollars, whether it’s from an inheritance, the lottery, or a sweet book deal doesn’t matter. What would be the first thing you would buy for yourself? 

About 120 acres of land where I and the children and grandchildren could build houses and be close enough to help each other (plus we'd get to babysit more often)! 

9.) If you could un-invent one thing in the world what would it be? 

Methamphetamines - they have ruined far too many young lives! 

10.) What is your favorite movie/TV Show? Why? 

The Vampire Dairies. Because it shows that there is hope that some vampires can become good!

Excerpt (from pages 147-149): Vlad Dracula is talking with one of his newest vampire friends, Gary Logan. Vlad has explained how he and other of the oldest vampires have progressed to the point where they need little if any blood. Gary has asked why the out-of-control vampires continue to attack humans. 

Vlad replies (through thought transference) “They get a thrill from the hunt and then, as the life drains from their victims, it provides a rush from the feeling of power over the living.”
 
Gary: “If I may be so bold, have you had such feelings in the past?”

Vlad smiled and nodded slowly, "It was a very, very long time ago Gary. We were fighting what you would call 'an asymmetrical war' against Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror and his Muslim invaders who outnumbered us at least three to one. I was looking for anything to slow them down. I guess you would say I used psychological warfare by building the 'forest' of impaled enemy soldiers we had defeated in previous battles. While we had numerous successes against units of the invaders we unfortunately were unable to hold off so large an invading army. It was about this time I was changed into what I am today. I was always in the front lines of battle and routinely soaked in blood. Perhaps that is what changed me into a vampire. One of my own Generals saw me surrounded by enemies and saw blood spurting up in the air. Thinking it was my blood he sent word that I'd been killed. My dear wife was distraught and threw herself from the heights of our Poenari Castle into the Arges River below.

Then my second cousin, Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary, from whom I had sought help in prosecuting the war, imprisoned me. Locked away, I soon became crazed with the desire for blood I would have otherwise found on the battlefield. Many fellow prisoners died because of it and after my escape I was a plague on the land. It took all too long before I regained some sense of my lost humanity.”

With downcast eyes Vlad thought, “Which is where the myths, legends and stories about me started – I’m afraid I earned them all.”


I reached over and patted him on the arm saying, “I’m sorry I brought up a topic that has induced clearly painful memories for you.”


Vlad smiled at me, “No, it is alright. If you haven’t heard the story before I think you need to know the type of vampire you follow. I hope it won’t detract from our relationship.”


“Never fear of my continued admiration and respect for you. You were a great leader fighting to free your people from an oppressive invader. Since you had no one to guide you after you were changed, as a ‘newborn’ vampire you did what came naturally. However, it begs the question, how did you stop?”


“I married again and she helped me overcome the constant thirst, giving me some of her own blood, and she brought me back to God.”


With tears in my eyes I thought, in reply to Vlad, “Women are clearly the superior gender, without them we men would be little better than wild beasts. “

Bio

Born in Washington D.C. during WW-II, I attended Washington and Lee High among other schools in the area before my parents moved us to Northern California where I ran track and cross-country. I received an Associates degree from Foothill J.C. then transferred to Texas Christian University where I received my Bachelors and commission in the USAF. I did a lot of writing while in the service, was stationed in many parts of the world and received a Masters from Ball State University's European Campus. After retiring, I finished a second Masters at Hardin-Simmons University (none of these were in English or Literature as my novels will attest). I then worked in the field of psychology both in a clinical setting and with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. I live in West Texas with my wife of 47 years and our three Pomeranians. Writing and reading are a passion along with a few antique automobiles and  muscle cars.

Writing Down the Bones: Story Construction and Evaluation the Romance Novel - Part 12 Dialog

Okay now you've gone through your manuscript and it's time to polish that baby of yours. So first we're going to look at dialog again.

Now as you look at it you need to ask yourself these questions:

1.) Does your dialog represent your character properly? Are these words what your character would truly say? Are you using the unique thinking or figure of speech of your character?

2.) Does it help the conflict?

3.) Is it fun? Is the banter quick/clever? Or is it kind of boring?

4.) Does it move the plot along? Does it give necessary information without being a data dump?

5.) Is it filled with emotion from your character? Does it show their state of mind?

6.) Does your action tags/tags stay in your characters POV?

Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release, Awaiting Fate, will be released March 27, 2015. It’s the first book of a spin-off series to my original series, Elemental Sisters. Awaiting Fate is the love story between Cain and Olivia. Cain is a demon warrior and Olivia is the princess to the Waden werewolf pack. This is a series, but like my original series, it is a standalone.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

I don’t have one in books. As far as television shows, I’d have to say the Reaper (George Foyet) from Criminal Minds.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

Cain is my favorite character. When I started writing, I had the idea of writing a series about sisters with extraordinary abilities, abilities that don’t evolve until they meet their fated mates. I titled the series Elemental Sisters. In the first book, Demon King’s Desire, I created Cain as a secondary character. He’s a warrior, second in command to the demon king, Lucas who is the hero. I never thought Cain would have his own book, but as I wrote Elemental Sisters II then III, I fell more and more in love with him (with his carefree, lightheartedness) and decided he needed his happy ending too.

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

I started writing paranormal romance because that’s what I liked to read the most. I have since branched out and started writing contemporary romance. I’ve completed two contemporary romance novels and I’m writing the third now, although none of those are published as of yet. Hopefully, within the next year, the first will be contracted. 

4.) What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a different series, a contemporary romance series.

5.) What got you to start writing?

I loved to read. I always wanted to write (even as a little girl). One day, I thought ‘if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it.’ So I did.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

My ideas come spur of the moment and usually at the most inopportune times.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

Since I write romance, I’d say the fact that I love crime shows and watch them over and over again would surprise people.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

Sadly, no.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

Ignore reviews. Everyone has an opinion and not everyone is going to like what you write. It’s hard to keep that in mind when you spent so much time imaging, writing, editing and promoting your book, but for the sake of keeping my sanity, I’ve made it stick.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

Well, this will sound odd, so I’ll preface it by saying criminology intrigues me. Literally, the channel Identification Discovery is on at all times of the day in my house. If the television isn’t on ID, then that’s because Criminal Minds is on (which will be changing very soon as my baby boy turns into a toddler). That said, I’d like to talk to the Zodiac Killer, just because I want to know who he is.  

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

It would depend on the time in my life. I’d say a lot of songs hit home. There are certain songs that I hear every now and then that take me back to certain times in my life. For example, Good Riddance by Green Day reminds me of my high school graduation. I have no idea why, considering it wasn’t our class song. The Fray’s album How to Save a Life reminds me of my junior year in college. I used to listen to that whole album in entirety over and over again. LOL. That’s the way I am with music though. When I like a song or album, I listen it on replay.

12.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

Dolphin because they always look so free and happy.

“What?” She managed the strength to mumble.

He drew closer, pressing his chest against hers. The heat of his body caressing hers, she grew warm with craving. Helplessly, her gaze drifted to his thick full lips. Her mind wandered. What she’d give for a kiss, a single mind-blowing kiss?

Cheeks flushing, her gaze darted toward his again. “Why are you…” Her body’s desires overwhelming her, she gasped for breath.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving?”

He wasn’t just angry. He was livid, and he was livid with her because she’d left.

She didn’t know what to say, had no excuse, not one she could tell him anyway.

BIO:

J.L. Sheppard was born and raised in Miami, Florida where she still lives with her husband and son.

As a child, her greatest aspiration was to become a writer. She read often, kept a journal and wrote countless poems. She attended Florida International University and graduated in 2008 with a Bachelors in Communications. During her senior year, she interned at NBC Miami, WTVJ. Following the internship, she was hired and worked in the News Department for three years.

It wasn’t until 2011 that she set her heart and mind into writing her first completed novel, Demon King’s Desire, which was published in January of 2013.

Besides reading and writing, she enjoys traveling and spending quality time with family and friends.

Happy New Year! Plus My New Year’s Resolution

First I want to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. May 2015 bring you everything you wish for!

Now let’s talk about those resolutions. We all make them but how often do we keep them? I’m awful at keeping mine. So once again I’m going to try.

Personal goals:

I have one big one – don’t get stressed out. I let little things get to me and I need to remember the attitude of the people on Aruba “it’s okay.” If I can do that most of the things that normally stress me out will just fade away. This is one I will have to work at and there will be times when I’ll fail but I know I will be focusing on this regularly so I already feel successful.

Of course I want to lose weight. Writing is a sedentary job and I need to exercise to keep the weight off. This is one that has been on the list for a few years. I have started exercising, nothing big but it makes me feel better and if I keep the little I’m doing I’ll be happy. Baby steps.

I want to eat healthier too. My hubby and have a tendency to do this in spurts. We just need to make those spurts longer and keep at it until we are doing it all the time.

Writing goals:

I’m still going strong with my Vespian Way series so I will continue to write stories for Heather and Storm, but I also have a few others I have let sit on a back burner.

I want to finish a short story I started for Melange. I have the story in my head but just haven’t been working on the story. Time to change that.

I have a werewolf story I wrote several years ago. I need to pull it out of the mothballs and see if I can polish it to a point of publication. If I do it will be another series for me to work on.

Meet My Latest Guest Kasey Moone! #Phaze

Welcome Kasey Moone. First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

I’ve been writing interracial erotic romance for about 5 years now. I actually started writing literary fiction then switched to romance writing because I enjoyed it better. I’ve always been a huge romance fan, and when I started writing in the genre, I knew instantly it was the genre I was supposed to explore. What else…I’m a die-hard romantic at heart and I love writing!

Tell us about your latest release.

Campus Touch is a story that I am self-publishing through Amazon, Smashwords, and AllRomance. It should be out sometime in November, if not sooner. It is the second book in my Edson College series, which a paranormal series that follows a group of hunky werewolf cousins in a prestigious college in Michigan. They are all very rowdy, funny cousins, and they all find their better halves (or lifemates) on campus. It’s a quick, action-packed story that I think readers will enjoy. The story focuses on a white male and a black female. The first book in the series is entitled Campus Prowl and is available at Amazon and AllRomance.

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

Wicked Witch of the East. She was the first villain that really frightened me as a child. Guess I haven’t gotten over it.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

That’s a hard one! Definitely Anelle Franklin from my first story Her Snowbound Knight. I like her because she’s tough but vulnerable, and of course she’s the first character I ever written in the romance genre that made me want to explore the industry. She’ll always be my first love. Her and her handsome man, Jasper Madison.

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

Interracial erotica. I picked interracial because I believe love crosses all boundaries (race, religion, political status) and I want to give a voice to couples that may be underrepresented in the romance industry. I also think it’s fun writing about two people from different backgrounds. An interracial writer can explore important topic.

4.) What are you working on now?

An interracial, contemporary romance called Small Talk. Then it’s off to another book in the Edson College series!

5.) What got you to start writing?

I started writing when I was 12, and wrote my first novel too! It was called Trouble in Rainbow Land. LOL. I started writing because I was always a quiet kid, sort of a loner, very imaginative and creative, I liked making up stories. I was a bit of a fibber—and sometimes that would get me in trouble. One day I channeled that energy into actually writing stories and the rest is history. I studied writing all throughout school, and even have a graduate degree in it. It is truly my passion. I can’t imagine doing anything else and I hope to do it full-time in the near future.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

Small moments. Something totally insignificant will happen, and I’ll brainstorm in my head for a few moments to try to figure out if a story could come from it. Sometimes I get it from watching movies, television shows, conversations I overhear. But it’s usually something totally random that has me rushing to my notebook to record it.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

I’ve lived in nine different places in my lifetime. And no, I was not running from the cops.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

Double jointed. Used to dance professionally. Excellent listener. Can remember random movie quotes.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

“Write with your heart in the first draft, and with your brain in the second.” For some reason, that always stayed with me. One of my instructors offered this advice to me in school, and it’s helped me not to be so critical of myself in the first draft. Note: I used to have a terrible inner critic.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

Muhammad Ali. I love his confidence. Don’t know what I’d ask him though.

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like a Bird”  -- because I’m a bit of a free spirit, very independent, creative, warm. I like my freedom.

12.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

A mighty Lion. Leos rule.
