Okay so it looks like I fell off the planet. Promise - I'm still here. The last four years have been ... hard. There's no other word for it. Everything is fine. I'm fine, but I've been the caregiver of my mom who has Dementia. Between her needs, work, etc I seem to have lost control of my time. I am still writing and am trying hard to get back to my blog.

In case you weren't aware Phaze and HSWF which where under the Mundania Umbrella have closed. I was smart enough to get my titles back before all this happened. I'm happy to say the three books I sold to HSWF have been picked up by Melange Books and are available through their Satin Books imprint. I have even sold a new title to them called Magical Quest due out in 2022

I have also been lucky enough to find a publisher for my Vespian Way series. I'm now with Blushing Books under the name of Bethany Drake. I have five titles out with them right now and am close to submitting two more. There's Desire's Destiny, Desire's Duty and Desire's Promise. Then there is two in my werewolf series, Tears of the Queen and Legend of the Tears. I have just finished the rough draft of the third book in the series and have plans for a fourth one the moment I submit it.

I'll probably still be sporadic here on the blog. Unless I win the lottery and can hire someone to help me I can't avoid it, but know I'm still here still working hard in the background and am hoping to do better at keeping my blog alive.

Shameless Promotion! I have a new cover!

I know I know I haven't kept up with the handout that well this time but I promise I have a good excuse - the parents (my mom and dad as well as the hubby's mom) have been needing my attention recently. I won't go into a lot of detail but it has kept me pretty busy.

And I wanted to post this last week but never got to it - Book Nine of the Vespian Way is due out Nov 3rd and I got my new cover - I LOVE it and hope you do too.

Blurb: Someone keeps altering the timeline and only Sam and Skye are aware of the change. The culprit doesn’t want Heather and Storm together, yet they keep finding each other, no matter how many times it is changed. Everything needs to be righted and the person messing with it needs to be stopped. It’s up to Sam and Skye to get things back the way it should be.

I'll post an excerpt when the book goes up for sale.

Welcome my Latest Guest: Marilyn Meredith is Back!

I want to welcome Marilyn Meredith. First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

I’m the author of two mystery series, The Deputy Tempe Crabtree series and the Rocky Bluff P.D. series that I write under the name F. M. Meredith.  My husband of many years and I live in the foothills of the Southern Sierra (CA) with two inside cats, a dog, and too many outside cats plus the occasional bear and mountain lion.

Tell us about your latest release.

Not as it Seems is the latest in the Tempe Crabtree series. Tempe and her husband Hutch go to Morro Bay for their son’s wedding and a much needed vacation. Upon their arrival, they learn the maid-of-honor has disappeared and soon learn she has been murdered. At her son’s request, Tempe begins an investigation. Her quest is complicated by too many suspects and spirits from the past.

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite author?

That changes from time to time, but right now I’d say William Kent Krueger. I love his mystery series, but my favorite is his stand-alone, Ordinary Grace.  I hope that I do as well on description of place as he does.

2.) What was your favorite book growing up?

Again, I had many, and yes, I read Nancy Drew—but I also read my mother’s book of the month books and my favorite was Gone with the Wind.

3.) Are you a plotter or a pantser and why did you choose that method?

I’m a pantser, though I do some initial planning ahead of time such as who is going to die, why, what method, and who are the folks who’d like to see this person dead and why. I begin to build on those ideas and usually start with something happening on the first page.

4.) Do you consider writing a career or a hobby? Why?

A career because I spend so much time writing and promoting—however, if I had to decide because of the money I make from my writing, I’d have to say it wasn’t much of a career. However, no matter, I am compelled to write.

5.) What are you working on now?

The next Deputy Tempe Crabtree mystery. I’ve finished the latest Rocky Bluff P.D. novel, but I’m still reading it to my critique group. When they’ve finished, I’ll go over it again and then send it off to my editor.

6.) What one piece of advice would you like to pass on to an up and coming author?

Read the kind of books you want to write. Too often I have people tell me they are writing a book or want to write a book but tell me they don’t read. If you don’t read, you aren’t going to be successful as a writer.

7.) If you had the ability to time travel and your first visit was to see a younger version of yourself what would you say to that younger self?

I’d tell myself to get started writing earlier  and learn as much about writing as I could through books, writers conferences, and finding a good critique group.

8.) You just got a million dollars, whether it’s from an inheritance, the lottery, or a sweet book deal doesn’t matter. What would be the first thing you would buy for yourself?

That’s not easy to decide, but with a million, I might hire an assistant to do the all the promotion that takes so much time.

9.) If you could un-invent one thing in the world what would it be?

I have no idea. Some of the modern inventions like the computer and Internet have made life so much easier for me as a writer.

10.) What is your favorite movie/TV Show? Why?

I like many TV shows—mainly mystery. As for favorites, they change as new ones pop up. But probably the one I like best is Blue Bloods. I think it usually is the most realistic police show—and besides, Tom Selleck is in it.

Excerpt from Not as it Seems:

Tempe and her husband, Hutch, traveled to Morro Bay for her son Blair’s wedding. Blair asked Hutch to officiate at the ceremony, and both he and Tempe looked forward to meeting Blair’s fiancée and her family.

Soon after checking into the Bay Cottage Inn, on one of the main streets of Morro Bay leading toward the beach, Blair arrived.

Her son’s anguished expression alarmed Tempe.

“Oh, honey.” She hugged him. “What’s wrong?”

Blair sank into a chair at the table in the small room. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep anything from you. Amaresh’s best friend is missing.”

“What do you mean?”

“No one has heard from her and we’ve talked to everyone who knows her and she doesn’t seem to be anywhere. Amaresh is so upset I don’t know whether or not we’ll be able to go through with the wedding.”

“You have gone to the police, right?”

“Of course. They were reluctant at first to even take the report. The desk sergeant went through the rigmarole that Kathy, that’s her name, Kathy Welling, is an adult and has the right to disappear if she so desires.”

“Amaresh became so angry I was afraid of what she might say. Though her eyes blazed, she explained carefully that Kathy is one of her best friends and was looking forward to being the maid of honor in her upcoming wedding. Finally the officer took down all the information, but I don’t think the police are doing much about it.”

“Oh, honey, that’s terrible. Have you checked with her family and all of her friends?”

“Of course, Mom, but no one knows anything.”

“What do you want me to do?” Tempe asked.

“I was hoping you’d ask. Do you think you could see what you could find out?”

Tempe glanced at Hutch who ran his fingers through his already mussed auburn hair and frowned.

He said, “Don’t you think it would be better if the investigation was left up to the local police department?”

Blair shook his head. “No, I don’t. They aren’t going to work fast enough for Amaresh. What do you say, Mom?”

Despite the fact that Blair was now a broad-shouldered, muscular man with his blond hair cut short, when he spoke to her like that, she couldn’t help but think about the slim boy with the corn-silk hair who managed to talk her into doing almost anything for him. “Of course I’ll help. But I’ll have to speak with everyone who knew her. Remember, I have no official status here so what I can do will be limited.”

Welcome My Latest Guest: Tina Donahue!

I want to welcome Tina Donahue. First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

Hey all, I’m an award-winning, bestselling novelist in erotic, paranormal, contemporary and historical romance for Kensington, Samhain Publishing, Ellora’s Cave, Siren Publishing, Booktrope, Luminosity, Decadent, and indie. Yay! Booklist, Publisher’s Weekly, Romantic Times and numerous online sites have praised my work, and trust me, I’m forever grateful for that. I’ve had my books reach finals in the EPIC competition, one title was named Book of the Year at a review site, and others have won awards in RWA-sponsored contests. I’m actually featured in the 2012 Novel & Short Story Writer’s Market. Talk about feeling like a freaking star. Before my writing career, I was the editor of an award–winning Midwestern newspaper and worked in Story Direction for a Hollywood production company. Outside of being an admitted and unrepentant chocoholic, I’ve flown a single-engine plane (scary stuff), rewired an old house using an electricity for dummies book, and have been known to moan like Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally whenever I’m eating anything Mexican or Italian. Yeah, I like to eat (burp).

Tell us about your latest release.

Surrendering to the Beast is book two of my Taming the Beast series, erotic paranormal-romantic comedy about a makeover service for supernatural beings in New Orleans, run by a witch. Staff members include a reformed demon, a voodoo priestess, and a good fairy. Surrendering to the Beast is the good fairy’s story. Here’s the blurb:

When she’s good, she’s very good. But when he’s bad, she’s better.

Taming the Beast, Book 2

As a good fairy, Heather is empathetic and chaste to a fault. No bad language, no dirty thoughts, flirting and no sex. But when a satyr named Daemon steps up to her reception desk at From Crud to Stud, she finds herself on the fast track to exquisite corruption.

Daemon is the total bad-boy package with a kiss straight from the dark side. Though he’s here for a supernatural makeover, Heather can’t imagine why any red-blooded woman would want him to change.

A disciple of the god of wine, Daemon has had his share of good times. But sex has never been this good. Heather brings out a new side of him, a side that makes him want to protect as well as pillage.
But Daemon needs a little creative backup to help set his fairy’s naughtiness free. And that means bringing in Mistress Jin. Under the genie’s tutelage and Daemon’s shameless lust, Heather is about to learn what it means to let loose.

Warning: Not your typical bedtime story. May lead to indecent behavior, a taste for voyeurism, discipline, bondage, m/f, m/f/f and f/f action, which will result in screaming orgasms. Proceed with caution.

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

The last villain in The Following (Kevin Bacon series – cancelled - bummer). Wow, he was one nasty dude. Killed his wife and would have offed his kids if given the chance. It was both creepy and fascinating to see him in action.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

Impossible to say. I love them all. While I’m writing their stories, or rather listening to them tell me the stories and I’m writing them down, they seem more real to me than actual people. J

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

I write contemporary, historical, paranormal, SciFi, romantic comedy, erotic, suspense , ménage and a blending of many of these genres together. I write what appeals to me. Keeps things fresh.

4.) What are you working on now?

Book five of my Taming the Beast series. Books 3 and 4 will be out in 2016.

5.) What got you to start writing?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid. I wrote my first book when I was nine – Dimples the Adventurous Fleaand illustrated it. After making copies, I went around the neighborhood and sold the copies to my friends’ parents. My first book tour. I’ve always written. Just wanted to do it.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

Honestly, they just pop into my head. I could be watching a movie, reading a book, be in a market grocery shopping and suddenly I’ll get an idea.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

I’m basically a very shy person. You wouldn’t guess it from my kickass heroines and steamy plots.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

I can also draw, but I’ve never pursued it. I like writing better.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

Read, read, read. Write, write, write. Don’t give up. Common sense, mostly.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

I’d love to talk to Stieg Larsson, author of the Millennium Trilogy (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Girl Who Played with Fire, Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest). I absolutely adored those books.

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

Katy Perry’s Roar

12.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

 Bird. They seem so free.

Excerpt:

Heather steeled herself to do battle with Satan. Cautiously, she faced her webcam and his image on her computer monitor. This evening, he’d assumed the form of a European playboy, a snifter of cognac held casually in one hand, dark hair slicked back, his blood-red ascot contrasting nicely with his white shirt and navy blazer.
He certainly knew how to dress.
Cara mia.” Heat smoldered in his voice and dark eyes. “What can I do to you?”
“For me,” she corrected gently, wondering when he’d ever get that right.
Grinning, he focused on her white peasant blouse and jutted nipples, her areolas tightened from the chilly weather, not him. Tonight was damp and cool thanks to a spring storm that continued to rage in the French Quarter. Lightning flashed and the office lights flickered.
Flames flared briefly in his pupils. “We’ll do many things to each other, no?”
Heather smiled politely, a knee-jerk reaction for a good fairy. Needing to get tough, she held up his overdue bill, hoping he’d look at it rather than her chest. Her hand shook so badly the paper rattled.
“How you tremble,” he cooed. “How pale you are. Allow me to put some color in your lovely cheeks. Heat that will last an eternity.”
Her skin got even clammier. “Please, just pay your account.” She waved the paper and talked fast before losing her nerve. “Your grandson failed to show for his last two appointments. I’m sure he had a good reason. Unfortunately, he didn’t call to cancel.” She offered an apologetic smile and pressed on. “Because you’re the cardholder, we had to charge you for the time. I’m so sorry, but it is the rule.”
One she was honor-bound to enforce as an employee of From Crud to Stud, a makeover service for supernatural beings. Howls from weres, hisses from vampires and obscenities from demons poured from the treatment rooms. Those poor souls were going through proverbial hell to suppress their beasts. They longed to date mortal women without freaking them out, while also winning their hearts the normal way. With real charm, not magic, with integrity and love, not lies and manipulation.
But these makeovers took the staff’s valuable time and clients needed to pay for the effort. Even Satan should understand that.
He gave her an indulgent smile. “What charges?”
Gasping, she dropped the flaming paper in her trashcan before it burnt her fingers.
“Later,” he said and killed the call.
Hurriedly, Heather put out the small blaze, chiding herself for letting the account get to this point. She should have been firm with Satan’s grandson when he signed up for the service. Determined to make up for being too nice, she brought up her bank account to pay the charges herself. She was about to transfer the funds when the lights flickered twice, thunder boomed and the front door flew open, banging against the wall.
She flinched.
A blast of dank air and rain blew inside, followed by a guy who looked to be thirty or so. He wore a black cowboy hat, snug navy tee, low-slung jeans and cowboy boots.
Once he shoved the door shut, he slumped against it, breathing hard.
Heather stood so quickly her chair rolled into the wall.
He didn’t notice. He’d closed his eyes and raised his face to the ceiling, his prominent Adam’s apple bobbing with his hard swallow.
Alarmed yet intrigued, she regarded the short, dark hairs on his throat and took the rest of him in. His rain-dampened hair was the color of dark chocolate, thick and wavy, flowing to his broad shoulders. They heaved with his next ragged breath. Tall, possibly six-three, he was lean yet muscular. His wet tee clung to his well-defined pecs and abs, those bruising biceps. Stubble covered his strong jaw, upper lip and cheeks. His bronze skin spoke of days in the sun.
Even from where she stood, Heather smelled his scent. Clean and masculine, a woodsy, fresh fragrance along with something else…the unmistakable odor of liquor.
Uh-oh. It wasn’t often that mortals, drunk or otherwise, happened upon this place. When they did, Heather had ironclad rules to follow. First, buzz Constance, a voodoo priestess who could remove memories by laying her hands on someone’s head. Following that, Heather was supposed to buzz Becca, a half-mortal witch who owned this place.
Heather leaned over her desk to press the intercom button.
The guy turned to her, blinked slowly and stared.
Her hand stalled.
His eyes were amazing, the color of Lipton tea, ringed by long, sooty lashes, his attention riveted as he drank her in. Given his slow, sexy smile, Heather suspected he was undressing her with his eyes.
She swallowed and was about to press the button when he groaned suddenly and mournfully, the sound of someone in serious pain.

Heather paused and decided not to call for anyone just yet. “Are you all right?”

Writing Down the Bones: Story Construction and Evaluation The romance Novel - Pt 9 Editing those scenes

Sorry, I didn't post anything last week. I went out of town to visit family and came back to a lot to do so I kind of missed it, but I'm back and ready to share the next section

Ready for the next segment of the hand out by Janice Bennett on writing the popular novel. Now we're editing our manuscript and going back to look at the same things we needed to pay attention when we were writing it.

So now we're going to go back and look at our scenes:

1.) Does your manuscript start with a dramatic, action-packed scene that is important to the story?

2.)  Do you have the story's conflict, tension, action and emotion continue to gradually rise instead of dip and rise and not keep your readers attention?

3.) Do the scenes develop naturally out of each other? Out of each character?

4.) Is each scene important to the plot, premise and/or story development?

5.) Do you vary the pace of your scenes and incidents or all they all the same?

6.) Have you pushed yourself to show all the important scenes needed and not avoided some of your conflict? And have you used all the forms of conflict - internal, external and interpersonal?

7.) Have you shown and not told?

8.) Is each scene as exciting as possible?

Welcome My Latest Guest: G.E. Taylor!

I want to welcome G.E. Taylor. First Id love you to introduce yourself.

I am a lover of romantic stories and started reading any Mills and Boon books I could find while in high school back in Jamaica. I was so taken by the stories I tried writing my own. Of course I didnt consider them to be that good, so they were hidden under my bed. My trip to the USA placed me on a different path. In college I majored in English but ended with a Master in Social Work from Rutgers University in NJ and later a Master in Education from Seton Hall University, NJ. Ive come full circle and is back to pursuing my writing. I live with my family in NJ.

You can find me at:

Tell us about your latest release.

Desperate Decision is my second book and it was published July 2015. It can be found on Amazon. Com, Barnes and Noble and Create Space. Com. The story is powerful and one which todays readers can identify with. The problems the Hero and Heroine faced in their relationship are as true for them as in real life. Going against tradition and family expectations can bring so much hurt and pain, only trust and the strength of their love can help them through it as Allison and Mason discovered. Allison escaped from her step-brothers house where hed kept her like a prisoner after he robbed her of her prize money which she intended to use to open up her pastry shop. She met Mason out of sheer desperation and he helped her when his senses dictated he shouldnt. But he went with his instincts.

Later he discovered that she was a master pastry chef who could put his failing pastry business back on top. He offered her a job, which she was more than happy to take, since she had no money. She proved she was the best person for the job, but his father had other ideas. He wanted a male working with Mason. But Mason didnt see it that way.

Masons father expected him to marry someone from his station and background. Instead, he fell in love with Allison which caused bloody hell between him and his father. In the end, Mason got back Allisons money from her thieving step-brother, reorganized his company with Allisons help and married Allison who turned out to be his helpmate and the love of his life.

Now I have a few questions for you I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite villain it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

My all-time favorite villain is Jack Nicholson as Jack Napier/Joker in the 1989 Batman movie. I admired his dapper kind of dress. The colors were fantastic and well-coordinated. But the life he brought to the character was outstanding.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

In The Lady Mentor, Joanna, the Heroine is my favorite because of her strength, her unselfishness, and her caring. She fights for what she believes in and for those who come under her care. She goes after what she wants and is not afraid to fail. She meets her challenges head-on. Vaughn-the Hero, I must include. He is her anchor, strong in will, but does not overshadow her. He knows when to give her the space she needs, but he never lets her run rough-shod over him. He is unselfish, caring and loving, was not afraid to put his life on the line for her when her own life was threatened.

In Desperate Decision, Allison, and Mason, the Heroine and Hero are my favorite. The circumstance under which they met, Mason could have easily walked away and not get involved with her. But he was a man who was not afraid of taking chances. He was strong, honest, caring and stood up for what he believed in, even if it meant going against his own family. Allison complemented Mason in business as well as in their personal lives. Without hesitation she would put his needs ahead of her own. She is strong when she needs to be, tenacious and caring.

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

Contemporary romance is the genre Im most comfortable writing. I chose it because Im better able to write about issues of today.

4.) What are you working on now?

Im currently working on Surrender My Heart, a contemporary romance.

5.) What got you to start writing?

First, I love reading. So when I discovered the romance books by Mills & Boon, I read all that I could find. Later I read the Harlequin books. I was very inspired by them and wanted to write a story and see it published by them.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

Sometimes I use the culture or events happening in the society.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

That I take my work seriously and that Im striving for it to rank with the best out there.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

I enjoy cooking and baking. I especially like to bake cakes and decorate them.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

Read! Read! Read! Read books from writers you admire. Luckily, reading is something that I enjoy doing, so that piece of advice reinforced my effort. I constantly try to improve my craft and take good advice seriously.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

Chef Gordon Ramsay. I admire him tremendously. When I cook, I try to strive for his standards and my results are sometimes laughable. Anyway, Id want to know what his life was like as a boy growing up and when did he know that he wanted to learn to cook. What was the reaction of his parents? Id also talk to him about the feelings he had with his first break-through. How did he handle that? And now that he was famous, how does he keep on top in a business that was so competitive?

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

The Shuffle by Kenny G. My life is beautiful and Im in a happy place. Im enjoying what Im doing.

12.) If you could come back as any animal what would it be?

A lion, maybe.

Excerpt:
The cold November air hit Allison hard, chilled her bones, and caused instant goose flesh to rise and cover her skin. She hunched over momentarily, trying to ward off the chill. Her eyes scanned the train station as a possible place to hide, but she discarded the idea immediately. It was too open. The streets across from the apartment were busy and not easy to cross. Estimating her chance of crossing them before being captured, the odds were against her. She would not have the time or the strength to do it before they caught up with her. Moving as fast as she could, she walked across the courtyard, down the embankment to the sidewalk.

Several cars and other vehicles waited at the stoplight. Making a desperate decision, she stepped up quickly to a car and yanked the handle. The door opened and she scrambled inside, slammed the door shut, and locked it. The light changed from red to green. The driver, startled, pressed the gas. The car leaped forward only to stop abruptly. Several horns blasted behind him instantly.

“What the fuck!”

 “Drive! Please drive,” she begged.

The sound of her voice carried a desperation that commanded him to obey. The car leaped forward as two people, a man and a woman, dashed into the courtyard. They hurried through the wrought iron gate onto the sidewalk looking up and down the street, peering into cars as they drove by. Allison eased down on the floor of the car until the strangers car circled the green and headed toward South Street. Her heart pumped furiously, and she swallowed with difficulty. Lifting her shaky hand, she eased herself upon the seat. She had no idea what she would say to this stranger when he stopped his car. He must think she was insane or had escaped from somewhere. She hadnt. This was the first time in her life that shed ever done anything like this.

He pulled into the parking lot at the supermarket, flung his door open, and walked around his car to the back right door. His long strides reached it before Allison got out. As she pushed against the door, he pulled it open. He was furious with her for not only scaring the living hell out of him, but for doing this unthinkable act. What could have possessed her to do it? Shed better have a damn good reason.

With both feet firmly planted on the blacktop, she was ready to stand, but she could not lift her body. He stood solidly in her path, one arm resting on top of the door, effectively cutting off her escape. Dressed in black jeans, cream polo shirt, and light black jacket, his body allowed little room for her to move.

Allison looked up at him and swallowed nervously. He was lean and taller than Douglas, so she would say he was over six foot tall. His face was deeply tanned, his blond hair shaped his head perfectly, and straight brows enhanced his cold blue eyes that were not looking at her in a friendly way. His nose was straight, jaws firm and square, his lips slightly full and sensual. His hard eyes concentrated on her steadily. A strong current of anger radiated from him. She felt it, and cursed Douglas fervently in her mind. There was a leached control about him that frightened her. Most of all, she needed to be on her way. The quicker she apologized, the faster she could leave, she decided.

“Im sorry, very sorry, I startled you back there,” she said sincerely. “Thank you for helping me. Again, Im truly sorry. Ill leave you now.”

“Like hell you will! Not so fast,” he stated, not moving an inch as he continued to look at her. Despite the anger that ran through him, the sound of her voice drew his attention. It reminded him of warm honey. He liked it, and he could hear genuine regret in her tone. She was also very nervous, and she should damn well be, for the stunt she just pulled. He wasnt ready to let her walk away from him. Her skin was light brown, and he wondered what her eyes looked like. The huge dark glasses she stared at him through hid them very well.

His eyes on her were unnerving. She couldnt help but move restlessly in her seat. If only he would move. Each minute he delayed her was making it easier for Douglass friend to find her.

“What made you do such a foolish thing?”

“Under ordinary circumstances, I wouldnt have done it.” The thought of how close she came to involving him in an accident made her stomach turn.

“Care to describe the circumstance?”

Writing Down the Bones: Story Construction and Evaluation The Romance Novel Pt 8 After writing the first Draft Premise and Characters

Hi All!

Just a reminder that I won't be posting an interview this weekend - I'm going out of town to visit my sister but I can tell you who my next guess will be - G. E. Taylor, contemporary romance author.

We're going to continue on with the handout I've been working on by Janice Bennett. The last seven posts have dealt with what to do before you write. So now that you've written that rough draft... You're happy that it's finally done, but now the real work begins. You have to edit it. Like a lot.

Janice spoke about premise then asked questions about your characters again so I'm combining them into one blog.

As far as your premise goes: did you follow it through and not get lost in sub plots along the way?

Now how about your Characters?

1.) Now you should review your characters. Make sure you've highlighted all their facets, explored their emotional states and made full use of their personalities.

2.) Check and see if they always behave in a manner that is logical and makes sense for their personality.

3.) Make sure your reader can identify with them.

4.) Look at the conflict between your hero and heroine. Is it strong enough between them and the characters that interact with them through out your book?

Writing Down the Bones: Story Construction and Evaluation The Romance Novel Pt 7 Resolution

Just a quick note before I get back to the handout. I won't be having any guests for the next two weeks. One is because of the holiday. Next weekend I plan on being out of town visiting family and knew it would be difficult getting anything uploaded.

Now, the section of Janice Bennett's handout is dealing with resolution.

As always I try to write everything in my own words but still keep the information given as close to the original as possible,

1.) Do you have your most dramatic moment as the resolution of the story?

2.) Does it support the premise?

3.) Does your resolution surprise your reader or can they predict it,

4.) Does it have a satisfying ending? Is it full of emotion? Any poetic justice?

5.) Did you tie up all those loose ends? If not did you give a satisfying reason for not doing it Like hinting at a sequel or series?

7.) * number six was a repeat of number four in my opinion so I skipped it. Did you build the tension up so it is as high as it can be at the end of your story?

8.) * eight is a lot like 5 but Janice does ask if you have the plot threads tied up before the romance is settled?

Welcome My Latest Guest: Catherine E. McLean!

I want to welcome author Catherine E. McLean. First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

I'm a wife and mother, who has ridden and exhibited Morgan Sport Horses. I'm an avid clothing and costume designer, an award-winning amateur photographer, a 4-H leader, and a Red Hatter who loves bling.

Living on a farm nestled among the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains of Western Pennsylvania, I write "starscape fiction"—fantasy, futuristic, and paranormal stories—where I (and a reader) can escape to other worlds for adventure and romance.

Tell us about your latest release.

Love, vengeance, attempted murder, and a bomb…No reason to panic.

That line lets readers know HEARTS AKILTER is a lighthearted fantasy/sci-fi romance. The setting is a space station, one that doesn't orbit any planet but is near a jump portal that leads to Earth's Star Colonies.

The story is about people. Marlee is a pragmatic robotics maintenance tech and Deacon is a bomb expert. Then there's Henry (the cute little robot), who is evolving into and A.I. (Artificial Intelligence). Henry works exclusively in sickbay, and when he has pains in his chest, he complains to Marlee that he's having a heart attack.

Well, robots don't have hearts, and when Marlee investigates, she finds a bomb. Because of who Marlee suspects put the explosive in the robot, Marlee decides to secretly contact a bomb expert, one Deacon Black, and get him to diffuse the bomb.

Trouble is, someone is trying to kill Deacon. When he sets a trap to reveal his would-be assassin, he nabs Marlee instead. He's immediately intrigued by her refreshingly forthright and gutsy attitude— okay, so he's smitten. But Marlee has recently sworn off men, especially handsome ones with boy-next-door grins.

In essence, HEARTS AKILTER is about her heart, his heart, and a robot's nonexistent heart. A quick-paced, smile-of-a-read.

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

Topping my list is the Sheriff Of Nottingham (as played by Alan Rickman  who also played Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series). I liked him in both roles for his sexy black attire, his deep voice, and his facial expressions (or lack thereof). And, especially, because of the seriousness of both roles and the sudden Wow! factors that pop up when either interacted with others.

The Sheriff's wow factor include  'funny-punny' lines at unexpected moments, which made me laugh.
Then there's straight-faced Snape who could put in a deep-throated zinger that shocked and sank home a point. Or scared one witless.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

Adrada, the Archangel of Departed Souls, who has gigantic golden wings edged with mournful purple feathers. Why? Because he slipped into my mind when I was trying to figure out a murder premise for a contest. That bantering between the piece's narrator and Adrada won me the contest, and my first published, lighthearted sci-fi piece.

Since Adrada came on-stage, so to speak, he's been either a key player or a bit player in most of my stories. He was prominent in my paranormal fantasy romance, KARMA AND MAYHEM, but he's not in HEARTS AKILTER.

3.) What genre do you write in? What made you pick that one?

It wasn't a matter of picking a genre as much as following my heart and of telling tales of love among the stars and in the days of tomorrow. For a long time, I didn't know what genre my stories fit into other than to call them sci-fi space opera. Then in the latter 1990's, I discovered futuristics and knew it was my niche. Trouble is, by the time I got a novel polished to market, futuristics had devolved into something else. I still struggle to find others who write the old-fashioned futuristics. With recent reprints of some of the old ones (re-released by their well-known authors), another generation of readers might spark the demand for futuristic/space opera sci-fi romance.

4.) What are you working on now?

When HEARTS AKILTER's launch is over, my goal is to get back to the self-edits of LOVE UNDER LITE SPEED (a lighthearted, sci-fi / space opera romance) and submit it. This novel is a galactic brew of thieves, political intrigue, family duty, government loyalties, and saving face— where notorious privateer Sarina "Dammit" Dannon and no-nonsense government agent Aaron Cantrall find love travels under lite speed. That's not a typo. It's 'lite' speed, not light speed.

5.) What got you to start writing?

I always entertained myself with stories I created in my mind, but I didn't write them down. After all, no one ever told me I should become a writer or that I had talent for storytelling. Yet, I read a lot and I worked with wordsas a secretary and later as a journalist for a small, regional specialty publication.

Then an injury to my back made it impossible to keep working as a secretary. I would shut out the back pain by concentrating on writing novels and letting myself be swept into starscape worlds. After my husband read my work, he suggested I see if there was any merit in my writing and maybe I could make a little money with it. I found a well-known literary agent and asked him to just tell me yes or no, quit writing or go with it. The man sent me back a nine-page letter with two sheets, printed back to back, single spaced, of book titles. In essence, he said I was a storyteller, but I needed to bring the art and craft to the writing. I didn't even know there were techniques and devices that made for marketable stories. I readand studiedevery one of the craft and how-to books on his lists, then I took the Professional Writing Courses at the University of Oklahoma. That was in the early 1990's. (The program is no longer offered.) A month after completing the short story phase of the course, I sold a short story, then another, and another.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

Out of thin air. That's no joke. I never lack for a topic to write about nor a storyline. I think that's because I never censure my subconscious. It can give me an idea, birth a character, tell me a scene of a possible story, and so on, at any time. But here's the deal, I will jot down whatever it is, and when I have time, I will look at it and see if I'm interested or the idea has merit. That's why I have this three-ring binder filled with "Bits & Pieces" from which to write stories. I'll never have enough lifetimes to get through all of themor the new ones that keep arriving!

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

That I never anticipated becoming a writer or an author. I never told myself that I wanted to be a writer. Why? Because I was raised to get an education, get a job, feed and clothed myself, and pay my own bills. Writing was not considered a worthwhile endeavor. And that's likely why writers are still told not to quit their day jobs. J

8.) Do you have any special talents?

I sew. Although I cannot create outfits or costumes from scratch or by using my imagination, I can duplicate what I see in history books or in pictures, or clothing catalogues. Most recently, I've been recreating Erte gowns for Darq, who is the fashion doll, avatar-heroine of my JEWELS OF THE SKY novel. Erte, by the way, is considered The Father of Art Deco (think Downton Abbey dress styles). The hard part about creating Erte fashions is that I only have paper doll illustrations to go by, but those artists don't draw in seam lines, so I have to rely on my knowledge of garment-making to duplicate outfits.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

Since I never aspired to be a writer or author, was never encouraged to pursue such a career, there was no advice offered—other than get a job, pay your bills, put food on the table, and stand on your own two feet. (Which is, nonetheless, good advice.)

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

Sorry, I cannot think of a single person or famous figure, living or dead, who I would like to meet, let alone converse with. As to fictional characters, well, that's another matter. There are so many  The Sheriff of Nottingham and Snape, Captain Kirk, Captain Picard, Mal (FIREFLY), Iron Man, James Bond, Remington Steel, Wonder Woman, Agent Peggy Carter . . .

As to what to talk about? I would ask: What would you do for true love, a life-time lasting love-of-your-life?

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

This question is just too, too funny. You see, I can't recall songs or music lyrics, carry a tune, nor play an instrument. I can't even understand the dot-flags on music sheets. I even hum off key. Being so musically challenged, I never took an interest in singers, songwriters, bands, or orchestras.  However, my husband says I don't march to the beat of any drum, I follow the wail of bagpipes. J

12.) If you could come back as any animalwhat would it be?

A Morgan Horse. Not the show ring type but a Morgan Sport Horse. They are honest, intelligent, willing, forgiving, try their best, and they don't bottom out, that is, they don't quit. I owned, rode, and drove a number of themand rode one to become a Reserve National Champion Competitive Trail Rider.

Excerpt

HEARTS AKILTER
By Catherine E. McLean @ 2015

The bomb. Right. Dismantle the bomb. In this lift? No, that was insane. “Marlene, if the bomb goes off accidentally—”
“It’ll blow the station to kingdom come?”
He nodded.
“Not to worry.”
She said that with such nonchalance that he found himself speechless. He cleared his throat. “Why not? Did you snatch the portable Bomb Disposal Unit, too?”
“Better.”
“What’s better than a BDU?”
“Garbage incinerators.”
“What?” He glanced out into the darkness beyond the lift.
Giant machinery stood silhouetted and veiled in shadows. “Where are we?”
“Deck forty-three, Ring D zero three. Relax. Don’t panic.  They once accidentally incinerated a torpedo in number four, over yonder.”
She pointed to the left. “Nobody heard or felt it explode, and there wasn’t even a drail’s worth of damage done to the incinerator, or anything else.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“It happened three years ago. I was there, a deck above.
Never mind.”
Henry manipulated his finger appendage, grabbing and briefly tugging the shirt sleeve of Deacon’s good arm. “Marlee would never lie about anything so important.”
“Does she lie about unimportant things?” He instantly regretted his caustic remark.
“I do not know.” Henry spun sideways, facing Marlee. “Do you lie about unimportant things, Marlee?”
“I have been known to tell a white lie now and then to spare someone’s feelings, but on the whole—” She looked away from Henry.
As her blacker than black eyes met his gaze, Deacon felt pinned to the wall.
