I want to welcome Andrea R. Cooper! First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

Hi everyone, I’m Andrea. Full-time wife/mom and writer whenever I can squeeze it in. I’m addicted to Game of Thrones, Chai Lattes, and Zumba.

Tell us about your latest release.

Fairy Trouble is a short story paranormal romance and a retelling of the Cinderella story in a modern setting with a twist. Cindy doesn’t want to go to the ball or meet the ‘prince’. So her newly appointed Fairy Godmother takes her place and that’s just the beginning of the troubles.

This story is bundled along with three other fabulous fairy-tale retellings.

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

The Evil Queen from Once Upon A Time. I love how the writers of the show not only tweak the fairytales, but show why this villain does things. She also has a good/vulnerable side and shows not everyone is entirely evil…or good for that matter.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

Celeste from The Legends of Oblivion series. Even though she faced adversity and pain, she didn’t let it define who she was or how she treated others. She has an inner strength that is refreshing.

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

I write lots of genres. My favorite are fantasy/ paranormal romance and historical romance. I’ve always been drawn to reading those type of books. I love learning new things about history, yet I enjoy the freedom of creating worlds in fantasy/ paranormal books.

4.) What are you working on now?

I’ve several projects that I work on because I’ve found it helps to avoid the dreaded writer’s block. If one story fizzles out or I can’t get inspired, I move onto another. Sometimes I write a chapter or two in one story, then hop over to another.

5.) What got you to start writing?

I’ve always created characters and story, just acted them out with friends and neighborhood kids. But even though I grew up and life happened, these stories never went away and new ones kept filling my thoughts, so I started writing.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

Everywhere. An idea, a dream, a snatch of conversation. Viking Fire came from finding out the name Lochlann was Gaelic for Viking.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

That I don’t typically read mystery or suspense unless it is high-level. Too often, I figure out who-did-it before the half-way point in the book and I like to be surprised. So it has to be a really good book.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

I used to choreograph dance routines for me and my friends. And I can typically remember everything that was said in a conversation, especially if there was a great significance to the communication.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

The best advice I received was to keep writing. I don’t know of any authors who wrote one draft of their first manuscript and were instantly published.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

Grace O’Malley – Irish pirate who never lost a battle. I’d interview her and find out how she was so successful and what it was like to meet Queen Elizabeth.

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

Stronger (What doesn’t Kill You) by Kelly Clarkson

12.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

A tiger. They are one of my favorite animals.

The woman stood staring open-mouthed for a moment, blinked several times, then rushed away pushing the stroller. Oops, did it again! Esmeralda flicked her wand and removed the last few minutes of the woman’s memory. The lady stopped, looked around, then shook her head, and continued down the path. “Now that that’s settled, let’s get you ready for the ball.” Although the ball was still hours away, of course, Esmeralda clucked her tongue. “Doesn’t hurt to be prepared ahead of time.” And I might just be able to go smell that amazing man—I mean, bakery—again.

“Did my stepmother put you up to this?” Cindy stood, and the chair toppled over. “Tell her some fancy magician will not make me go to the party. It’ll be full of rich, stuffy people.”

“But you have to go.” There were no second chances, no do-overs. It had to be that ball with him and Cindy, before midnight this Thursday—or nothing. This should have been a slam-dunk assignment. But now she wondered if the council and Fanny had given her a difficult task to prove herself worthy.

Cindy snapped her fingers. “Why don’t you go in my place?”

“W-what?” The idea held some appeal. Esmeralda could see Ryan again and be dressed to make him drool, and his arms could be around her as they danced. Wait, dance with a human? What was wrong with her? Was it just because he smelled so good that she wanted to be near him? Fairies didn’t love or marry each other. If a fairy fell in love with a human, he or she would have to give up immortality and become human.

Esmeralda’s gut clenched. Fairies had no choice in their futures or dreams. It was like being locked in a position at birth with no hope of a career change. How many times had she wanted to live with the humans and experience everything they did? To taste fresh, warm bread and not puke it up half an hour later? To kiss? And that brought back the image of the handsome baker, and she shivered, wanting to know if his lips tasted sweeter than nectar. If she traded places with Cindy …

Andrea’s Bio: Andrea has always created characters and stories. But it wasn't until she was in her late twenties that she started writing novels.

What happened that ignited the writing flame in her fingers? Divorced, and disillusioned by love songs and stories. They exaggerate. She thought. Love and Romance are not like that in the real world. Then she met her husband and realized, yes love and romance are exactly like the songs and stories say. She is now a happy wife, and a mom to three kids (two boys and a girl).

Andrea writes contemporary romance suspense, fantasy, paranormal and historical romance. When not writing or reading, one may find Andrea dancing in Zumba or chasing her two youngest kids through the park.

Meet my Latest Guest: Margaret L. Carter!

I want to welcome Margaret L. Carter. First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

My fascination with vampires began when I read DRACULA at the age of twelve, and I started writing at age thirteen. From vampires and horror, I branched into reading all kinds of speculative fiction. Inevitably, I decided to major in English in hopes of getting paid for reading. I’m married to a retired Navy Captain, and in the course of our numerous moves, I earned degrees from the College of William and Mary, the University of Hawaii, and the University of California (Irvine). My dissertation, on the Gothic novel, included a chapter about DRACULA. I’ve had stories in various fantasy anthologies such as Marion Zimmer Bradley’s “Sword and Sorceress” series. At book length, I was first published in literary criticism; after that, my first novels were SHADOW OF THE BEAST (from the viewpoint of a female werewolf coming to terms with her heritage) and DARK CHANGELING (from the viewpoint of a half-vampire coming to terms with his heritage—note the pattern?). My husband also writes fantasy. We’ve collaborated on a sword-and-sorcery trilogy, beginning with WILD SORCERESS, and a prequel, LEGACY OF MAGIC, was recently published. He’s the primary author on those books. We have four sons, eight grandchildren, and a couple of great-grandchildren, as well as two cats and a St. Bernard.

Tell us about your latest release.

In “Merry Twinness,” an erotic paranormal romance e-book short story with a Christmas setting, the heroine discovers that her lover has a secret he must reveal to her before he can formally propose marriage. It was inspired by the telepathic twin motif I’ve encountered in numerous SF stories.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

Hannibal Lecter. He’s incisively intelligent and cultured as well as, in a sense, utterly alien to normal humanity. (The prequel, HANNIBAL RISING, loses that last quality.) It’s impressive how, even though he’s manipulating Clarice Starling for his own purposes, he also proves himself to be a brilliant psychiatrist, who helps her work through the traumas of her past even while he’s in a maximum security cell (and, later, in the psychodrama he sets up at the end of HANNIBAL).

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

Roger Darvell, protagonist of DARK CHANGELING and CHILD OF TWILIGHT. He’s the earliest fully developed vampire in my published works, so I have a special fondness for him. As a forty-year-old psychiatrist suffering from dark cravings and a very strange midlife crisis, he discovers he’s actually only half human, his mother having been a member of a naturally evolved vampire species. He embodies my favorite fictional theme, the character who discovers hidden truths about his own nature.

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

I started as a horror fan and writer, then expanded into fantasy. I’ve also published several books and articles about the supernatural in literature, mainly vampires. Now I write mostly paranormal romance. From the beginning of my interest in horror, what really fascinated me were relationships between human and nonhuman characters. I wanted to read fiction from the viewpoint of the “monster,” which was much harder to find in my early years. When paranormal romance became a separate market category, I recognized it as the genre I’d wanted to read and write all along. (In fact, the first complete story I ever wrote, as a teenager, involved love between a man and a ghost.)

4.) What are you working on now?

The next-generation sequel to FROM THE DARK PLACES, a horror novel with Lovecraftian elements and a romance subplot published by Amber Quill Press. I started planning the current novel-in-progress over thirty years ago, before I’d even completed the first book, but I never got around to writing that sequel until now. I decided it was about time. Oddly, I now have the opposite problem from the one I had when I first plotted this work. Back then, while writing the earliest draft of FROM THE DARK PLACES, which occurs at the same time it was originally written (the 1970s), I contemplated its sequel as a near-future story, set about twenty years after the first book. I had to imagine a plausible future that would eventually be made obsolete by real life, no matter how accurately I guessed what those two decades would be like. Now reality has overshot my sequel heroine’s twenty-first birthday by almost twenty years! So I decided to keep her the age she needs to be, yet set the story approximately in the present; a 1990s time frame would simply confuse readers. I’ll include a prefatory note stating that the time lapse has been fudged.

5.) What got you to start writing?

After reading DRACULA at the age of twelve and delving into all kinds of speculative fiction, I started writing at thirteen because the library didn’t have enough books of the kind I wanted to read, particularly horror. What I really wished for, as I mentioned above, were stories sympathetic to the “monsters.” I devoured all the ones I could find, but in the 1960s they didn’t have a thriving market the way they do now. An occasional gem buried in an anthology barely satisfied my longing. So I wrote my own.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

Mostly from other fiction that I admire. I yearn to create stories like the ones that especially enthrall me—but with my own slant.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

I worked for over twenty years as a legislative editor for the General Assembly of Maryland, proofreading material very different from horror and fantasy (although some ideas the legislators come up with can be rather horrifying).

8.) Do you have any special talents?

Aside from writing? Other than being a meticulous proofreader, the kind of person who can’t help wincing at all the errors in published works, I can’t say that I do.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

Not exactly advice, but support: When I had the privilege of briefly meeting Madeleine L’Engle, one of my idols, I told her I wanted to be a novelist. She said, “If you want to be a novelist, you are one.” The memory of that kind remark has encouraged me through the difficulties of pursuing publication.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

C. S. Lewis, who’s near the top of my list of favorite authors of all time. I’d love to hear him read scenes from whatever he’d be working on now, if he were still writing. Maybe the story of what happened to Susan, left alone in our world after THE LAST BATTLE? Also, I’d like to ask his opinion of many changes that have occurred since his death in 1963, such as space travel (he was dubious about humanity’s spreading its corruption to other planets) and female clergy in the Anglican church (in his lifetime, he was against that).

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

“God Only Knows (What I’d Do Without You)” by the Beach Boys; it was released shortly before my husband and I got married, and it encapsulates my feelings about our relationship. If I hadn’t married a future naval officer, I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today! I might have spent my whole life in or near the city of my birth. And without his encouragement, I probably wouldn’t have worked up to a PhD in English, in which case my writing career would have been very different if it existed at all.

12.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

Cat. Domestic cats have it made. Nothing to do all day but eat, sleep, and be petted, and unlike dogs, they’re not expected to cater to human commands.

His hesitant tone and the apprehension in his eyes chilled her. “So you do have a dire secret?” She didn’t quite succeed in keeping her voice light.

“I hope you won’t think it’s too dire. But it will come as a shock.” He set the box on the couch and clasped both of her hands in his. “Please don’t freak out.”

Footsteps muffled by the carpet sounded in the adjacent dining room. The door leading to it opened. A man stepped through, took three paces toward the fireplace and halted. Nicole blinked up at him, at first too stunned to process what she saw.

Cal’s double.

Except that he wore a University of Maryland sweatshirt instead of a pullover sweater with a white shirt and Christmas necktie, he looked identical to her lover. No, not quite—the mane that grew to just below his ears was less tousled than Cal’s but a bit shaggier, as if overdue for a barber visit. The clothes and hair, though, didn’t negate her first impression. She couldn’t doubt his identity. 

She sprang to her feet. “You have a twin brother? And you never told me?”

“I don’t exactly have a twin. I am twins.”

Meet my Latest Guest: Lily Bishop!

I want to welcome Lily Bishop. First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

Hi, I’m originally from Georgia, but I live in South Carolina. I’m married with two children in middle school, so I stay pretty busy. I work full time as a data analyst for a research university, and in my spare time I write romantic suspense.

Tell us about your latest release.

I’m working on the City Lights series right now, and I just released the third book, For the Win. This novella tells the story of Lindsey and Ric, two characters who appeared in the other two books, and it takes place during the same time period as the first book. That has been quite a challenge. Lindsey and Ric’s story will continue in two future novellas that I am hoping to finish this summer.

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

I loved Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He started out as a villain, but then he wasn’t so much a villain by the end.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

Oh, that’s a tough one. Right now I’m in love with Ric, the male lead I’m working with in this trio of novellas. He was born in Venezuela and he owns a resort on a private island in the Bahamas. He has an amazing accent, and he is such a romantic.

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

I write contemporary/romantic suspense. I like stories that have an element of danger, so that’s what I write. My characters end up in tenuous situations, but we don’t always see the danger in the beginning.

4.) What are you working on now?

I’m finishing this series with two novellas, both about Lindsey and Ric, and they are both almost ready for editing.

5.) What got you to start writing?

I’ve always written, ever since middle school. I’ve always had stories in my head. I first published in 2013, and believe me, I have a ton of stories to tell.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

Well, my villains usually come from true news stories about things that happened. Other than that, I usually come up with the characters first.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

A lot of my books revolve around blackjack, and I can’t play a lick. I rely on my husband to help me with those scenes.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

I’m good with data. Lately all of the boards and committees on ask me to take their minutes. I can usually pick out actors from their voice.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

Write. Talking about writing does not count. Social media posts about writing does not count. The best thing a writer can do is write the next book and make it a good one.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

I really admire former president Jimmy Carter, and I would love to meet him.

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

Landslide – I see life as constantly changing.

12.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

I would come back as a cat. I love cats. A four-year old Tortie rules our house.

"Of course," she said, wishing she hadn’t made such a fool of herself. They started walking together toward the bank of elevators outside the casino. His arm around her shoulders felt like the most natural thing in the world.

 "Well, this is awkward," she said, when they were alone in the elevator. "Nothing like ripping your dress at the blackjack table to get someone's attention." The ripped dress had stolen her confidence, and where she had been an outgoing flirt earlier, she felt herself slipping back into her natural shyness.

"You didn't have to."

The elevator stopped on her floor, and Laura led the way to her room. "Didn't have to what?"

"Rip your dress. You had my attention already."

I want to welcome Linda McLaughlin. First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

Thanks for having me today, Barbara. I’m a lifelong book junkie and history fanatic ever since I listened to my grandmother’s story about our family history when I was little. So when I started writing, it was natural that I would gravitate toward historical romance, though I’ve also written contemporary, fantasy and science fiction romance, with heat levels from sweet Regency to erotic male/male. The steamy stuff is written under my pseudonym, Lyndi Lamont.

Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release is a short holiday story, A Kiss and a Promise, in the Exquisite Quills A Holiday Anthology Volume 2 A Collection of Winter Holiday Tales. My story takes place at Yule and features a Victorian sleighing party to collect mistletoe. It’s a sweet story, with characters who fall into the “new adult” age range, but it’s also a prequel to my steamy Victorian short story, How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride. I love Killian Jones, aka Captain Hook, on Once Upon a Time. Why? Well, okay, aside from the fact that he’s gorgeous, he’s a charming villain with a core of decency, and it has been fun to watch the bad boy get it bad for good girl Emma. And a British accent never hurts either.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

Oh, gosh, I don’t know if I can pick just one! My favorite hero is still Jacques Corbeau, my sexy French army officer from Rogue’s Hostage. Sexy Frenchman pretty much says it all.

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

As mentioned above, I’m a lifelong history nut, so historical romance is my default setting.

4.) What are you working on now?

I’m taking a little break from writing at the moment to deal with personal matters, but I have several projects in the works. One is a sequel to How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride, featuring the grown up characters from A Kiss and a Promise. Another is a contemporary paranormal novella involving a psychic and a cop.

5.) What got you to start writing?

I wanted to write when I was a kid, but my parents dissuaded me because there wasn’t any money in it. (They were mostly right about that part.) I became a librarian so I could work surrounded by books. At some point, I figured out that you could work a day job and write so I started doing that.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

There’s no good answer to that. Sometimes they come from a bit of history, a news bulletin, a dream. Sometimes a casual remark can spawn a story idea. Each story is different and has a different genesis.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

I don’t know. It seems to work the other way. People who know me are surprised when they read some of my writing. I’m a very quiet person, very much the librarian, but I have an earthy side that comes out in my writing.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

Not really. I used to play the piano, but I haven’t done that in years.

9.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

I’d love to talk to Jane Austen about her life and times.

10.) What song would you say describes your life?

I’m giving my age away with this one, but I’ve never been one to do things the standard or easy way, so I’d say I’ve Gotta Be Me pretty well sums it up.

11.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

A lap dog. A life of luxury surrounded by people who love you sounds good right now.

The younger Hammonds quickly donned their coats and mufflers, but Harry held Sophia’s coat for her. He rested a hand on her shoulder, before offering her his arm and leading her to the sleigh. The chill air stole her breath, though she felt oddly exhilarated.

“Pile in, everyone,” Harry ordered.

Gerald ushered Cora and Lydia into the back seat of the sleigh and squeezed in beside them. Little Phoebe climbed into his lap, leaving Sophia in the front between Harry and her brother. She leaned a little closer into Harry’s warmth, enjoying the closeness.

“Which way?” he asked.

Reggie gave directions to the best spot for gathering holly and mistletoe, and Harry steered the horses in that direction, bells attached to the harness jingling with each step. The weather had been beastly for the last month, but it had turned the estate into a winter fairyland. Silent snow-covered fields stretched as far as she could see, and each tree sported a layer of white, softening the stark look of the winter scene. The sky was overcast, and she suspected Harry was right to rush them along.

As soon as the sleigh stopped, Reggie jumped out, made a snowball and threw it at Cora as she exited the sleigh. She yelped and chased Reggie, Phoebe on her heels squealing with excitement. Sophia watched them with amusement. Oh, to be a child again.

But she was long past that sort of behavior. She’d had a season in London, after all. She glanced at Harry and caught a gleam in his eye. “Do not even think of joining those hooligans.”

She and Nick watched in silence as the doors shut.

As soon as the SUV pulled out of sight he swept her into his arms, taking her mouth quickly. His lips soft, silky, demanding against hers. His kiss was probing, hot, searing with fire, tasting of wine and cigars.

Jess gasped at the furiousness of it all. It was so fast, intense. She wanted his cock inside of her now. He made her feel like no other man could, a raging inferno of sexual heat the moment he laid a single finger on her.
