Okay so it looks like I fell off the planet. Promise - I'm still here. The last four years have been ... hard. There's no other word for it. Everything is fine. I'm fine, but I've been the caregiver of my mom who has Dementia. Between her needs, work, etc I seem to have lost control of my time. I am still writing and am trying hard to get back to my blog.

In case you weren't aware Phaze and HSWF which where under the Mundania Umbrella have closed. I was smart enough to get my titles back before all this happened. I'm happy to say the three books I sold to HSWF have been picked up by Melange Books and are available through their Satin Books imprint. I have even sold a new title to them called Magical Quest due out in 2022

I have also been lucky enough to find a publisher for my Vespian Way series. I'm now with Blushing Books under the name of Bethany Drake. I have five titles out with them right now and am close to submitting two more. There's Desire's Destiny, Desire's Duty and Desire's Promise. Then there is two in my werewolf series, Tears of the Queen and Legend of the Tears. I have just finished the rough draft of the third book in the series and have plans for a fourth one the moment I submit it.

I'll probably still be sporadic here on the blog. Unless I win the lottery and can hire someone to help me I can't avoid it, but know I'm still here still working hard in the background and am hoping to do better at keeping my blog alive.

Barb:)

I've been thinking,,,

I just realized that Tuesday has come and gone and I haven't posted in a while. I know, I was the caregiver of my mother-in-law and she has moved on so I deserve to grieve. Take the time I need to work my way through this.

I also know it's so easy to get out of a habit of doing something. They say it takes 21 days for something to become habit, yet I've worked hard to do something good for me like exercise everyday just to drop it months later. I must push myself. It's to easy to backslide if you don't so I started writing this post.

I read the letter that Samhain sent to their authors, letting them know they were closing their doors. This saddens me. I've heard of a couple of publishers closing recently. There are so many reasons for this but when they mentioned that the cost of having books at some of the third party sellers was something that effected their bottom line that struck a cord with me.

I wrote my books, yet a good chunk goes to to these sellers before we (me and my publisher) see any of it. It's one of the reasons I always put my publisher as my buy link when I'm visiting other blogs. I make more if my books are bought directly from the publisher, but I sell more when I put the large sellers.

I wish there was a way to educate our readers. Let them know that to support the author they love they should buy from our publishers when they can.

Welcome My Latest Guest: Barbara Meyers! #amwriting

I want to welcome Barbara Meyers.  First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

Thanks, Barbara. I write contemporary romance for Samhain Publishing. When I’m not writing I put on a green apron and work part-time as a barista for a global coffee company. My son and daughter are grown and they both went off and found romance and got married and are living their own versions of happily ever after. Currently I reside in central Florida with my almost-perfect husband Bill and my almost-perfect black Lab mix, Pepper.

Tell us about your latest release.

Fantasy Man was great fun to write and even more fun to edit. It’s a mix of romantic comedy and light suspense.

One lie of omission could turn her wildest dream into a world of hurt.

Quinn Fontana never thought witnessing two murders would lead to her first taste of freedom. But when her overprotective brother puts her on a plane for L.A. to hide until it’s time to testify, she can’t stop the shiver of anticipation.

If her life is going to be cut short, she plans to live it to the fullest. And that includes seducing her intended protector—her brother’s best friend and star of her private fantasies.

When security consultant Reif Callaghan awakens after a rowdy night out with his coworkers to find a warm, willing woman in his bed, he’s almost past the point of no return when he realizes it’s Quinn. And he’s come way too close to debauching his best friend’s little sister.

Her enticing offer—one night, no holding back, no regrets—is a temptation he can’t resist. Until he realizes she’s been hiding a piece of vital information that could cost not only their one chance to turn fantasy into reality, but their lives.

Warning: Contains fantasy-come-true sex, get-it-out-of-their-system sex, angry-as-hell sex, and on-the-run sex. Also, accidental ferret-napping. Asthmatics are advised to load up on antihistamines before reading.

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

The first villain that came to mind was Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs. He was just fascinating. I loved how he got into the minds of his victims. He was twisted and sick yet he loved beauty. Gave you the chills yet you couldn’t look away. Anthony Hopkins was brilliant in that role, wasn’t he?

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

As an author you hate to say your favorite character is the one you just wrote, but I’m going to say it anyway. Quinn, the heroine in Fantasy Man. I actually started writing this story a long time ago and I like to think my writing grew along with her. It was so much fun to see her evolve from this rather irresponsible, live-for-the-moment girl who accidentally on purpose put herself in harm’s way, into a more responsible individual who realized she wasn’t just risking her life any more, but the hero’s as well. I loved watching her “grow up” without losing her spontaneity.

3.) What genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

Contemporary romance. I hate to say this but the reason I write contemporary is that I don’t really like doing the kind of research you have to do to write convincing historical romance. J And I prefer to read fiction in a contemporary setting.

4.) What are you working on now?

Something with the working title “Those Who Can, Date.” It’s about a dating expert who’s horrible at dating and a playboy-type mega movie star (ala George Clooney) who’s sick of dating.

5.) What got you to start writing?

Again, I hate to admit this, but it was reading one too many poorly written romance novels. I just knew I could write better. (And I do! Tee hee) You are making me admit to a lot of things today!

6.) Where do you get your ideas?

Absolutely everywhere. The dating book arose from a comment a friend’s daughter made about using up all of her dating talking points when her date lasted longer than expected. I thought that was hilarious. Often I get ideas from a comment someone makes or a situation or a setting. It just depends.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

Honestly, I think people would be surprised to find out how old many authors whose work they enjoy actually are and they’d probably be surprised to find that out about me. At one of the first professional writer’s conferences I went to, even I was surprised at the amount of gray hair in the room! We usually write about characters who are much younger than we are, but trust me, we still remember what it’s like to fall in love, to find that zing with a man, to want the happy ending. And some of us started writing when we were the ages of our heroines.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

No. Unless being right 99.9% of the time counts as a special talent. I used to be able to touch the tip of my tongue to my nose, but either my tongue doesn’t stretch as far or my nose relocated itself because I can’t do it any longer. I can also come up with poems with Dr. Seuss-like rhyming schemes on the fly.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you?

“Want-to-be writers admit defeat easily. Successful writers never give up.” Why? This isn’t really advice. It’s something I read in a copy of Writer’s Digest years ago and cut out and stuck on my desk. For most of us it takes a long time to get good at writing. Quality writing is very important to me. I had all these stories I wanted to tell, but my ability to execute wasn’t there early on. Persistence, however, often outweighs education and talent. I simply refused to give up. My writing got better with every manuscript I finished and eventually I found editors who like my work enough to offer me contracts.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

Wow. That is a good question. Eve maybe. I’d like to ask her why she felt so compelled to take a bite out of that apple. Was the serpent really that convincing?

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

Happy (from “Despicable Me 2”) by Pharrell Williams.

12.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

I’d be a tortoise. Because slow and steady always wins the race.

Excerpt:

He focused over her shoulder for a moment. “I thought,” he repeated, “you’d be angry with me. That you were angry. Upset. You know…earlier.” He felt himself reddening in embarrassment. This wasn’t coming out right. He ran his fingers through his hair. “Hell. I’m sorry, okay? I’m so goddammed sorry about what happened—that you—that I…” Words failed him. She appeared to be amused at his inability to adequately express how he felt.
“It’s okay—”
“It’s not okay. I took advantage of you—”
“Oh, please! You did not!” she replied. “I’m to blame—”
He shook his head, having no problem holding her gaze now. “No. Don’t even go there.
You are not to blame. I wasn’t thinking. I wasn’t even awake. I didn’t know what I was doing.”
Her grin widened. “Really?”
“Look, I have this condition,” Reif began.
Quinn raised an eyebrow. “Out of control libido?”
“No. Jesus. No. I can control myself, okay?”
“Rats.”
“It’s similar to sleepwalking. Sometimes it is sleepwalking. Alcohol, and I had a lot of it last night, aggravates the symptoms.”
“What are you saying?”
“That it might seem like I’m awake to someone else. I might act like I know what I’m doing. I could even carry on a conversation, but—”
“You’re actually asleep,” Quinn finished for him.
“Basically, yes.”
“And that’s what happened this morning.”
Reif nodded.
“Then I can’t wait for a repeat performance when you are thinking and awake and know exactly what you’re doing.”
His mouth dropped open. “Dammit, Quinn—”
“Oh, so you remembered who I am. Just for the record, Tony was supposed to call.”
“He did.” Her eyebrow shot up in question. He waved a hand. “I just got the message now. Messages, actually. About five minutes ago.”
“Oh.” She considered this new information. “Well, you see? You didn’t know. I’m the one who showed up unannounced, the one who raided your fridge—you’re out of Corona Light, by the way, and next time I’d appreciate it if you’d stock up on limes—who crawled into your bed and fell asleep.”
Reif groaned. “Tony’s going to kill me.”
“Oh, please. Tony doesn’t have to know. I’m certainly not going to tell him.”
“He’ll know.”
“How?” Quinn scoffed. “He’s two thousand miles away. So is my dad, thank God. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”
“Oh, yeah?” Reif fixed her with what he hoped was a piercing look. “What if you’re pregnant?”
“Excuse me?”
“Unprotected sex,” Reif reminded her. “Unless you’re taking precautions?” He couldn’t help the hopeful note that crept into the end of the question.

Welcome My Latest Guest: Tina Donahue!

I want to welcome Tina Donahue. First I’d love you to introduce yourself.

Hey all, I’m an award-winning, bestselling novelist in erotic, paranormal, contemporary and historical romance for Kensington, Samhain Publishing, Ellora’s Cave, Siren Publishing, Booktrope, Luminosity, Decadent, and indie. Yay! Booklist, Publisher’s Weekly, Romantic Times and numerous online sites have praised my work, and trust me, I’m forever grateful for that. I’ve had my books reach finals in the EPIC competition, one title was named Book of the Year at a review site, and others have won awards in RWA-sponsored contests. Before my writing career, I was the editor of an award–winning Midwestern newspaper and worked in Story Direction for a Hollywood production company. Yeah, I like to eat (burp).

Tell us about your latest release.

Surrendering to the Beast is book two of my Taming the Beast series, erotic paranormal-romantic comedy about a makeover service for supernatural beings in New Orleans, run by a witch. Staff members include a reformed demon, a voodoo priestess, and a good fairy. Surrendering to the Beast is the good fairy’s story. Here’s the blurb:

When she’s good, she’s very good. But when he’s bad, she’s better.

Taming the Beast, Book 2

As a good fairy, Heather is empathetic and chaste to a fault. No bad language, no dirty thoughts, flirting and no sex. But when a satyr named Daemon steps up to her reception desk at From Crud to Stud, she finds herself on the fast track to exquisite corruption.

Daemon is the total bad-boy package with a kiss straight from the dark side. Though he’s here for a supernatural makeover, Heather can’t imagine why any red-blooded woman would want him to change.

A disciple of the god of wine, Daemon has had his share of good times. But sex has never been this good. Heather brings out a new side of him, a side that makes him want to protect as well as pillage.
But Daemon needs a little creative backup to help set his fairy’s naughtiness free. And that means bringing in Mistress Jin. Under the genie’s tutelage and Daemon’s shameless lust, Heather is about to learn what it means to let loose.

Warning: Not your typical bedtime story. May lead to indecent behavior, a taste for voyeurism, discipline, bondage, m/f, m/f/f and f/f action, which will result in screaming orgasms. Proceed with caution.

Now I have a few questions for you – I have found readers do like to know fun things about us writers.

1.) Who is your favorite villain – it can be from a book (even one of yours), movie or TV show. And why?

The last villain in The Following (Kevin Bacon series – cancelled - bummer). Wow, he was one nasty dude. Killed his wife and would have offed his kids if given the chance. It was both creepy and fascinating to see him in action.

2.) Who is your favorite character out of your books? Why?

Impossible to say. I love them all. While I’m writing their stories, or rather listening to them tell me the stories and I’m writing them down, they seem more real to me than actual people. J

3.) What do genre do you write? What made you pick that one?

I write contemporary, historical, paranormal, SciFi, romantic comedy, erotic, suspense , ménage and a blending of many of these genres together. I write what appeals to me. Keeps things fresh.

4.) What are you working on now?

Book five of my Taming the Beast series. Books 3 and 4 will be out in 2016.

5.) What got you to start writing?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid. I wrote my first book when I was nine – Dimples the Adventurous Flea – and illustrated it. After making copies, I went around the neighborhood and sold the copies to my friends’ parents. My first book tour. I’ve always written. Just wanted to do it.

6.) Where do you get your ideas from?

Honestly, they just pop into my head. I could be watching a movie, reading a book, be in a market grocery shopping and suddenly I’ll get an idea.

7.) What would people who read your work be surprised to find out about you?

I’m basically a very shy person. You wouldn’t guess it from my kickass heroines and steamy plots.

8.) Do you have any special talents?

I can also draw, but I’ve never pursued it. I like writing better.

9.) What was the one piece of advice you received when you were an aspiring author that has stuck with you? Why?

Read, read, read. Write, write, write. Don’t give up. Common sense, mostly.

10.) If you could talk to any famous figure (present, past or fictional) who would it be and what would you talk about?

I’d love to talk to Stieg Larsson, author of the Millennium Trilogy (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Girl Who Played with Fire, Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest). I absolutely adored those books.

11.) What song would you say describes your life?

Katy Perry’s Roar

12.) If you could come back as any animal – what would it be?

 Bird. They seem so free.

Excerpt:

Heather steeled herself to do battle with Satan. Cautiously, she faced her webcam and his image on her computer monitor. This evening, he’d assumed the form of a European playboy, a snifter of cognac held casually in one hand, dark hair slicked back, his blood-red ascot contrasting nicely with his white shirt and navy blazer.
He certainly knew how to dress.
“Cara mia.” Heat smoldered in his voice and dark eyes. “What can I do to you?”
“For me,” she corrected gently, wondering when he’d ever get that right.
Grinning, he focused on her white peasant blouse and jutted nipples, her areolas tightened from the chilly weather, not him. Tonight was damp and cool thanks to a spring storm that continued to rage in the French Quarter. Lightning flashed and the office lights flickered.
Flames flared briefly in his pupils. “We’ll do many things to each other, no?”
Heather smiled politely, a knee-jerk reaction for a good fairy. Needing to get tough, she held up his overdue bill, hoping he’d look at it rather than her chest. Her hand shook so badly the paper rattled.
“How you tremble,” he cooed. “How pale you are. Allow me to put some color in your lovely cheeks. Heat that will last an eternity.”
Her skin got even clammier. “Please, just pay your account.” She waved the paper and talked fast before losing her nerve. “Your grandson failed to show for his last two appointments. I’m sure he had a good reason. Unfortunately, he didn’t call to cancel.” She offered an apologetic smile and pressed on. “Because you’re the cardholder, we had to charge you for the time. I’m so sorry, but it is the rule.”
One she was honor-bound to enforce as an employee of From Crud to Stud, a makeover service for supernatural beings. Howls from weres, hisses from vampires and obscenities from demons poured from the treatment rooms. Those poor souls were going through proverbial hell to suppress their beasts. They longed to date mortal women without freaking them out, while also winning their hearts the normal way. With real charm, not magic, with integrity and love, not lies and manipulation.
But these makeovers took the staff’s valuable time and clients needed to pay for the effort. Even Satan should understand that.
He gave her an indulgent smile. “What charges?”
Gasping, she dropped the flaming paper in her trashcan before it burnt her fingers.
“Later,” he said and killed the call.
Hurriedly, Heather put out the small blaze, chiding herself for letting the account get to this point. She should have been firm with Satan’s grandson when he signed up for the service. Determined to make up for being too nice, she brought up her bank account to pay the charges herself. She was about to transfer the funds when the lights flickered twice, thunder boomed and the front door flew open, banging against the wall.
She flinched.
A blast of dank air and rain blew inside, followed by a guy who looked to be thirty or so. He wore a black cowboy hat, snug navy tee, low-slung jeans and cowboy boots.
Once he shoved the door shut, he slumped against it, breathing hard.
Heather stood so quickly her chair rolled into the wall.
He didn’t notice. He’d closed his eyes and raised his face to the ceiling, his prominent Adam’s apple bobbing with his hard swallow.
Alarmed yet intrigued, she regarded the short, dark hairs on his throat and took the rest of him in. His rain-dampened hair was the color of dark chocolate, thick and wavy, flowing to his broad shoulders. They heaved with his next ragged breath. Tall, possibly six-three, he was lean yet muscular. His wet tee clung to his well-defined pecs and abs, those bruising biceps. Stubble covered his strong jaw, upper lip and cheeks. His bronze skin spoke of days in the sun.
Even from where she stood, Heather smelled his scent. Clean and masculine, a woodsy, fresh fragrance along with something else…the unmistakable odor of liquor.
Uh-oh. It wasn’t often that mortals, drunk or otherwise, happened upon this place. When they did, Heather had ironclad rules to follow. First, buzz Constance, a voodoo priestess who could remove memories by laying her hands on someone’s head. Following that, Heather was supposed to buzz Becca, a half-mortal witch who owned this place.
Heather leaned over her desk to press the intercom button.
The guy turned to her, blinked slowly and stared.
Her hand stalled.
His eyes were amazing, the color of Lipton tea, ringed by long, sooty lashes, his attention riveted as he drank her in. Given his slow, sexy smile, Heather suspected he was undressing her with his eyes.
She swallowed and was about to press the button when he groaned suddenly and mournfully, the sound of someone in serious pain.

Heather paused and decided not to call for anyone just yet. “Are you all right?”
